What it's about

Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after Godzilla's defeat at the end of Minus One, with Japan still rebuilding after the war. A new monster attacks the city of Matsumoto; it is named Ghidorah and later reveals its full three-headed form, King Ghidorah. Meanwhile Godzilla regenerates and returns, larger and more aggressive than before. Kōichi Shikishima, the former kamikaze pilot at the heart of the first film, is pulled back in.

It is the 39th Godzilla film overall and the first to pit Yamazaki's version of Godzilla against another monster. Toho has kept most plot details back, so we'll stop there.

• Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima, both returning.
• Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki and Sakura Ando, also back from Minus One.
• New: Min Tanaka as Kanji Murakami, a biologist, Masami Nagasawa as a weather forecaster and Jun Kunimura as a medical officer.

What early reviews say

Critics who saw it at its festival premiere are largely positive: 95% on Rotten Tomatoes from 41 reviews and 77 on Metacritic from 20 critics at the time of writing. The scale and the effects get the most praise. Opinion is split on whether it beats Minus One: some reviewers found the human story less tightly built, and a few thought the later stretches turn sillier and the ending weaker.

Box office tracking in October pointed to a US and Canada opening of roughly $25 million to $35 million, which would be a record start for a Japanese live-action film there.

Do you need to watch Minus One first?

Yes. Minus Zero is a direct sequel, and its emotional weight comes from the Shikishimas' story in the first film. Godzilla Minus One (2023) is a two-hour watch, made for under $15 million, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. If you only see one Godzilla film before November, make it that one.

Should you see it in IMAX?

If you can. It was shot for IMAX rather than converted afterwards, and one trailer was released in the taller 1.43:1 IMAX shape, so the biggest screens will show more of the frame.
